Come Up Higher
Are you a chicken or an eagle? A chicken scratches around in the dust, pecking at little grains of corn, eyes always focused downwards, always on the lookout for a fight, either as victim or bully. Life is a drudge, the same old views, the same routine every day, needing to scratch around and work hard just to eat.
This is not how your heavenly Father planned for you to exist.
Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV) But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.
An eagle has its sights on high. It nests in the crevice of rocks, well out of the way of predators. It effortlessly flies on the current of the wind, enjoying amazing views, swooping down to collect its food which will satisfy it for a few days. Eagles live a life of power, protection and relative peace and ease.
This is the sort of life we are supposed to live. The higher life.
Psalm 61:2 says, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I”.
When God is calling us higher, He is calling us to trust in the Rock, the unshakeable foundation, the strong fortress – Jesus Christ.
Psalm 62:1-2 says the Lord is my rock, my salvation, my strong tower – it stops me from being greatly shaken!
When an aeroplane, flying in the sky, encounters turbulence, it can drop several hundred feet in a moment. It is frightening. But what does the pilot do? He steadies the plane and then takes it up higher, above the rough weather, where the journey is smooth.
If you are suffering a little turbulence right now, allow it to cause you to go up higher. Run to the Rock that is higher than your circumstances.
Psalm 62:8 says, “Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”
Jesus is trustworthy. Rely on Him for your safety. Instead of getting weary of the constant fight to protect your pecking order; instead of getting bored of the same old view; instead of the constant need to scrimp and save to pay your bills - come up higher, soar above your situation and run this race of life with the ease and majesty of the eagle.
