Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?
Life can feel unfair, especially when we become seriously ill. We ask, “Why?” and in the suffering and struggle we blame God. Perhaps it is His will. Maybe it is my time to go. Maybe I did something wrong. Maybe God will make me into a better person through this sickness. Maybe God is just an angry God and He doesn’t want me to be well. All these conclusions are wrong. They prevent us from receiving the healing that God so desperately wants to give us.
We never want to be sick. God is no different. His desire for our well-being is greater than our own. He cares about us so deeply and His love for us is so strong that He gave us His only Son, Jesus Christ to rescue us from the suffering of this world.
So if God loves us, why do we suffer? It goes back to the fall of man. Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden is not just a children’s story. It was a real event that changed the course of history forever. When they ate the fruit, sin entered the world and with it a curse came upon mankind. The devil now had control over the earth, and what was supposed to be a place of love and perfection became a place of hurt and suffering.
But God is love and His love never fails. That is why Jesus died on the cross. He paid the price for sin. He took every infirmity and sickness and effect of the curse in His own body. He suffered in our place. Then through the power of His resurrection He gave us His life.
The question we should ask is how can I take hold of the healing that Jesus died to give me? How can I escape the curse? Firstly, know how deeply God loves you. Then, read and believe the healing promises that God has given to you. We find these in the bible. 1 Peter 2:24 says: Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. It is by faith that we receive God’s promises and faith comes by hearing the word of God.
